Pheromones are like invisible “smell messages” that dogs can send to each other. They don’t smell them the way we smell flowers. Dogs have a special organ (vomeronasal organ) in the nose that picks up these special messages.

That’s why dogs mark their territory with pee - it contains pheromones. It’s their way of letting other dogs know their presence. Or that’s why they smell each other's butts. They’re smelling pheromones and basically trying to get to know each other by seeing another dog’s “ID card” (pheromones).

But there’s one calming pheromone that mother dogs use to comfort their puppies. It’s called DAP. They send these “comforting messages” while breastfeeding, and it helps puppies and dogs feel reassured and relaxed in situations that may cause fear or anxiety.
